Vidding Tutorial: Ripping & Converting DVDs
Note:
→ For this tutorial I'm using DVD Decrypter and AutoGK
→All imags have been scaled down and can be clicked to be made larger
First things first is you'll need
AutoGK and DVD Decrypter, obviously. Now when I do the AutoGK process, it uses Virtual DubMod as well. So I figured I'd just link ya'll to the AMVApp Download
here. Both Virutual DubMod and DVD Decrypter are in there as well as some other programs that you won't necessarily need for this process. But it's okay, they won't hurt anything. Besides, if you're using this tutorial to rip DVDs for vidding purposes you may end up using them sooner or later anyways!
Step 1:
The first thing you need to do is pop your DVD in the little slot. We're starting simple. Then you open up DVD Decrypter, like so:
It should automatically recognize your DVD and it'll make a list for you in the right hand column highlighted in blue. If it doesn't recognize it right away then just go to the dropdown menu under 'Source' at the top and choose whichever drive you put the disc in.
[If it pops up with some question about what region your DVD is just...pick whatever region it is! It doesn't mean anything is wrong]
Step 2:
Now you have to select where you're going to rip the files to. So under 'Destination' click the little folder to browse and choose wherever you want to put the files. They're gonna take up quite a bit of space so if you have it you probably wanna just put it on some kind of external hard drive space. That's where I put mine
Step 3:
Now you have to decide which parts of the DVD you're actually going to rip. You could just leave everything in the list selected and it would still work just fine. But I usually only like to rip the actual episodes themselves. So I just go through and select all the biggest .VOB files. The .VOB files are going to be the actual video files and I would select ones that are at least 100,000kb+ because the rest is just title menus and stuff.
Step 4:
Now just click the little green arrow to start.
Now all you have to do is wait for it to rip everything. A little progress menu will pop up while it's working. It shows you the progress of each file seperately on top and then the project as a whole on the bottom. And when it's all finished it'll play you a little song, which is fun :)
Step 5:
Now it is time to open up AutoGK, like so:

Choose which file it is that you want to convert by clicking the little folder to the right of the 'Input File' section. When you get to the folder where you ripped the files to it should look like this:
[Choose only the the '1' files for each pair (VTS_01_1.vob, VTS_02_1.vob, VST_03_1.vob, etc.) I'm not entirely sure why this is, I think it may have something to do with the 'FAT32' file system. External hard drives are pre-formatted with the FAT32 file system and cannot hold any single file that is over 4GB. So my guess is that DVD Decrypter splits those files up and that's why you have the vts_01_1 and vts_01_2. When you convert the files in AutoGK you only need to choose the first file in the pair and it will connect them for you. You will end up with a single .avi file.]
Next select the output size. For this step I always just choose to set the Target Quality [in percentage] to 100%. The file will be about 720x400 and anywhere from about 600-800mb in size. Now if you don't want them to be this large you can set it to 75% or whichever setting works best for you.
Click to add the job to the Queue and then go back to 'Input File' and put in the next file in the series (VTS_02_1) and do this until you have each episode ready in the queue.
Finally you simply click to Start and let AutoGK do it's thing!
It's gonna take a little bit depending on the output quality you chose and how fast your computer is and stuff. I would say on average, for me, it takes about 2-3 hours to convert a single disk.
And that's it! When your files are done converting they will go into the same folder they started with the other .VOB files. All you need to do after that is name them and you're done. You can get rid of the .VOB files after that too because it'll start to take up some space.
